Don't look a gift card in the buss ?

Post by JohnW » Tue Nov 22, 2005 6:10 pm

This may sound stupid, but....

A guy at work offered to give me his 2 year old Radeon 5950 U 256mb video card for free. He said he really wasn't using it to do more than surf the web, because he has a new rig with a KILLER SLI video card ( or was it PAIR of cards. ) This card is WAY better than my current one, but...it's been powered up for at LEAST 90% of those two years. It is just as fast as the 6600GT I've been looking at, but has an older chipset that doesn't have as good a shader section.

Should I get the NEW, retail cards, or trust this older one ? I'd save a good $130-$150.

Honestly, it feels wrong to take this card, when I know he spent about $400 for it, when it was new.

 HMMM, should you take the free card, or spend money on a new one that won't perform much better? This is a tough question, kind of like "what does 2+2=?" Take the bloody card fool! ::): ::):

2 years of constant use and two years older technology, ...but free.

I suppose so, but it still feels like taking an expensive gift for no reason.

Surfing the web?? That's not use, that's abuse! That card needs a home!! A bus where it can stretch its legs and run free! Give the card a home John!! For God's sake, think of the CHILDREN!!

Well, it USED to be his main computer and card, and he left it on, ALL the time. I think he is into first person shoot-em ups. Now, he has some killer box with a pair of SLI cards that makes this 5950 look like dog meat. Here is the thing, because of it's older chip set, it is slower is certain benchmarks, like 3D Mark, by a notable amount, but the game play bench marks are very close to the 6600GT.

What the heck!...Free is good.

p.s. L_P. Mrs W doesn't make the cookies in our house, I do.

I don't get it. Are you saying there's something wrong with your cookies? Or if I come to your house, you won't make me any, because I'm a guy? You should be more proud of your cookies than that.

Reminds me of a joke...A guy goes to a psyhiatrist and his psychiatrist says "Let's do some free word association." He shows him a picture of a house and the guy shouts "SEX!" He shoes him a picture of a car and the guy shouts "SEX!" Then he shows him a butterfly and the guy shouts "SEX!" Unable to find an explanation, he asks the patient "Why do you associate all these things with sex?" The patient looks at him and says, "Hey, it's you that's showing me all the dirty pictures!"

It's all about the delivery. You don't say "Here, I baked these for you." You say, "Hey, thanks for the card. Here, have a cookie or ten."

L_P,

If you came to my house, I might offer you cookies, as a polite host, but I wouldn't bake any " just for you ", and send them to you, 'cause that's way too "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy "

F1Addict,

If you think DayQuil makes you feel tingly, don't take too many Compazine.

I had to get a shot of valium, from the doctor, to fix that one !

Given that this is just your typical, run-of-the-mill flu/cold and not the dreaded Bird Flu (at least I don't think :? ), I haven't jumped into the really heavy narcotics. So far my experimentation has been pretty much OTC but if I'm not ready for Turkey I'll definitely ramp up the medication.

...and don't feel bad, I like to bake cookies, too. I just made a bunch weekend before last using this recipe that requires vanilla pudding. You know if it's got pudding in it, it's gotta be good.
