Rebooting... rebooting...re...

Post by F1Addict » Tue Jan 23, 2007 6:09 pm

Christa's computer is rebooting spontaneously. It happens three or four times a day. It used to give her error messages when she restarted saying that she may need to update her BIOS but I wasn't able to find an update. It doesn't give her errors anymore, it just reboots, randomly.

I know there are millions of solutions to this but I was hoping that someone would have a good question to ask me that would narrow down the problem?

Here's her information...

It's either virused, overclocked, too hot, you just installed hardware it doesn't like or Windows is just doing what Windows does best. I've no idea what the operating temp range of your CPU is but that's where I'd look first, and make sure the HSF is spinning strong and free of dust.

Hmmm. For random rebooting, I'd wonder about the 5v power coming out of the power supply too. A little drop or noisey line could make the CPU turn off and on. ( Most processor are no longer 5v, but I think it is stepped down from the same line. ) It is odd that it would come back up and give a message about the BIOS needing something. I rather doubt THAT would cause a reboot.

Here is a test to see if anything on your computer is causing it. Boot it up with a floppy disk or restore CD and just let it sit. If it doesn't reboot, it may indeed be something crashing it that is on your HD.

Ok.

I cleaned out the inside, which was pretty dusty. I cleaned the HSF and carefully cleaned the heatsink, itself which had quite a bit of dust on it. I cleaned out the fan in the power supply and removed all dust from the inside of the case and motherboard.

She's using Norton and her definitions are up to date.

No software has been recently installed.

The power supply is a (I believe) Antec 350 watt unit that I installed last year. The original power supply was a 180 watt something-er-other.

After doing all of this, it rebooted 3 times before even reaching WindowsXP startup, then it tried to boot in safe mode but rebooted anyway. There were times when I got to the user log-in and times when I made it just past that point but it restarted a total of seven times before I got to the point where I could type this message.

I'm suspecting that it is the power supply again. I suppose we can rule out XP, given that it rebooted before even reacing that point.

Any other suggestions before I go buy another power supply?

Yeah. Boot the Windows XP CD and wait.... If the install CD can boot up, then it's a software issue. If it can't , it's hardware.

Or...discontect the HD power cord and let it sit. Windows can't boot with no HD. If it reboots, then it's hardware

Then, use a simple voltmeter on one of the power plugs. Check the 5 and 12 volt lines. They better be close to 5 and 12 as well as be STABLE at those values. Fluxuating is not good.

These appear to be your CPU specs:

http://processorfinder.intel.com/detail ... Spec=SL7C7

Verify that the bus speed and core voltages are correctly set in the BIOS, and that the CPU temp given in the BIOS (after it's warmed up) isn't much higher than the 67C rating.

Ok, I checked (am checking) the voltage on the power line going to the HDD. The 5 volt line reads from 5.08 to 5.10 and seems pretty steady. The 12 volt line reads between 12.07 and 12.17 and it fluctuates pretty wildly between those numbers.

The machine rebooted a number of times but it didn't appear to have any effect on the voltage nor were there any indicators on my Wavetek DM10XL that the reboot was a direct result of some voltage anomaly. The voltage would peak slightly on reboot but only by .01 or .02 of a volt. I can't imagine that a hundreth of a volt would cause a reboot.

I don't know how to check all that temp stuff or bus speed thing-a-ma-jiggys. I'll go into BIOS and see if I see any of these parameters and get back to you.

I was fully prepared to go get another power supply but now I think I might be wasting money. John, you're my point man on the power supply front, what do you think? Is a tenth of a volt difference what you would consider "fluctuation"?

Could it be the HDD, itself (sounds fine, no clunks or funky noises) or the MB, RAM?

I found the CPU Temp, which seemed chilly at 35º C. The computer had been on for about 30 minutes before I checked the temp so it should have been at full operating temperature, yes? I couldn't find the bus speed or core voltages.

I think it POST's at lower specs so it can recover from being overclocked too far.

I don't rate Norton very highly at the moment. We're using Avast, www.avast.com

No.

Since it's electronic, anything is up for grabs. I've never seen RAM go bad. Either it works from the get-go or it doesn't, unless the BIOS settings get screwed and the RAM timings go out-of-spec. The easiest way to rule that out is probably to clear your CMOS settings. The MB could have heat damage which would render it unstable, but there's no quick way to pinpoint your instability without swapping out the parts one by one.
I found the CPU Temp, which seemed chilly at 35º C.
That's excellent, unless you happened to mistake it for the motherboard temperature, in which case you still don't know the CPU temp.
The computer had been on for about 30 minutes before I checked the temp so it should have been at full operating temperature, yes?
Not quite, because temperature is also a function of load. If you're only idling away in the BIOS screen, it's not a stress test. 35C at idle is a good sign though, enough to rule out temp as the #1 culprit.
I couldn't find the bus speed or core voltages.
Often they are hidden until you disable the "automatic" settings in the BIOS.

The PSU is under quite high load when Windows is booting due to the prolonged hard drive access, so I would put a new PSU on your list now, unless you are keen to save $50 in which case I would do the Windows reinstall first. It's all guessowork now unfortunately.

So, did you let it sit in the BIOS screen or on a boot CD and see if it rebooted with Windows out of the picture ? If it does, you know it's a hardware issue.

The voltage seems with in reason. Although, I think P4s have a speparate 4 pin plug on the main board and the P/S for these havethe coresponding bundle of wires. I don't know if that is the case with the Celeron.

What might be happening is the P/W may be getting noisey, in a high frequency range, and that wouldn't show up on a simple voltmeter. If I were in the shop, and the reboots were easy to create or wait for, the P/S would be my first try, since I have them on the shelf and they are quick to change out.

Oh..here's a wierd one...perhaps the reset button or on/off button is going bad . If you can follow the reset button wire down the the board, unplug it and see what happens. The on button is the same, but to start the computer you'd have to use a small flat screwdriver and jump acrossed two pins to turn on the computer.

When I checked the CPU temp I had been doing stuff in Windows for about 30 minutes, I then restarted and went into BIOS. It took me about a minute to find the CPU temp screen but it wasn't just idling on the BIOS screen.

We're having a difficult time finding the XP discs that came with the computer, which are the only XP discs we have here. The XP product key is on a sticker on the case so I just need the discs. I'll look in Orange County this weekend to see if I have any there. I'm also going to bring up a power supply and some RAM. The only thing I don't have is a replacement MB and CPU. There is a place around the corner that sells that kind of stuff for $30. It's an electronics recycling place. I've purchased from them before and they're pretty good. I got a mother board and after I got it home and found that it wasn't working, I just took it back and they gave me another, which did work. It's sort of like a PC junkyard where you go in, pay your fee and take what you want. They had some really nice Nvidia and ATI cards for $5. I didn't know what models were good so I didn't get one.
